Pisgah Forest - Albert Cox Shuford
Albert Cox Shuford left this earth January 6, 2011 at Transylvania Regional Hospital. Born in February, 1920 to the late Fred and Lela Shuford. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Bird Shuford of Bryson City, NC.
He is survived by his 3 children; Fred Shuford and his wife Sue of El Paso Tx, Evelyn Shuford Wilson of Jefferson GA, Charlie Shuford and his wife Linda of Greenville SC. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Albert was raised and grew up in Brevard, NC. He graduated from Brevard H.S. where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. After graduation, he went to Western Carolina University where he majored in Physical Education and was also an outstanding athlete. While at Western, he met Betty Bird who was also majoring in education and they were married. Before graduating, Albert joined the Army for 2 years where he fought for his country in WWII and received the Purple Heart medal. When he returned, he finished college at Western Carolina University. He then moved to Nashville, TN and earned a Masters Degree at Vanderbilt University.
Albert and his wife moved to Brevard to teach school and raise a family. He taught at Brevard High School for 3 years where he was Head Coach of Football, Basketball, Baseball and was also Athletic Director. Then he became the principal at Straus Elementary School for 5 years.
In 1957 he and his family moved to Ft. Lauderdale Fl. for twenty years. Every year, he and his family would return to Pisgah Forest for the summer until they retired. After retirement, he and his wife resided for 8 months in Pisgah Forest and 4 months in Vero Beach Fl, until her death. He always loved the Western NC Mountains so he moved back to Pisgah Forest where he remained a permanent resident until his death.
A Memorial Service will be held on January 23, 2011 at 3pm at the First United Methodist Church of Brevard.
