Annette Raxter

September 24, 1936 — June 23, 2020

Brevard

Annette Marie Cassell Raxter, 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 23, 2020. A native of Transylvania County, she was the daughter of the late John Coatsworth and Leila Hayes Cassell.  She was the last of her large family that included 11 siblings. Her brothers were Bruce (Gladys), Thern (Polly), Bert (Dot), J.C Jr. (Louise), Carlos (Mary Katherine), Don (Dot), and Jim Cassell (Shirley); and, sisters, Lula (L.C.), Yvonne, and Linda.  She was raised in the Cherryfield and Calvert Community, and attended Mount Moriah Baptist Church as a child and with her family. More recently she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brevard.

Annette was a homemaker and mother. She loved to garden and preserved all the vegetables that she could while raising her children. She taught her children skills that would follow them into adulthood. After her children left home she worked for Macfie’s Drug Store, then Brevard Pharmacy, and Walmart. Ms. Annette loved the folks she worked with and could relate many funny stories from her work world that would leave you giggling.

“Mom” loved to travel and enjoyed her trips but especially the trips to Niagara Falls, New York City, Amish country, and to the Southwest.  Her most notable travels were to Alaska to see her brother Don and his family. During this time she and “Little Dot” Cassell forged a lifelong friendship.

Annette’s most important love was her family and close friends. Surviving are her daughters, Teresa Raxter, Lisa (Bill) Shuford, and her son, Matt Raxter (Serena).  She had four grandchildren Sarah Lutz, Jesse Lutz, Desiree Gash and Desiree Brunson; and three great-grandchildren Stella Gash, Will Gash, and Kenleigh Brunson. “Granny“  loved her grand and great grandchildren dearly. They encouraged her laughter and love, and were the light of her life.
