Arthur Litchfield

Arthur Clinton Litchfield, 85, passed away on November 27, 2011 at the Tores Home after a long illness.

He was born in Chicago, IL on April 9, 1926 to the late Arthur and Dorothy Schilling Litchfield. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Laquita J. Litchfield.

In 1943, at the age of 17, Arthur enlisted in the US Navy where he served for 25 months. He then completed his education at the University of Illinois, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950. He worked for many years in Illinois and in New York for Fleischman's Yeast where he was a pioneer in the development, packaging and marketing of dry yeast to the public. He later worked in a similar capacity for Anheuser Busch Inc in St. Louis where he became a Vice President in 1983. Throughout his career Arthur traveled to many countries advising at yeast plants around the world.

A resident of Transylvania County since 1995, he was active in the Pisgah Forest Farm Home Association, the United Way, tutoring in schools, and a long time volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by his second wife, June Prichard Litchfield; his sister, Betty Faircloth of Chicago, IL; four sons, Arthur Jr. and wife Laura of Franklin, TN, Steven and wife Eileen of Greenville, OH, Jeffrey and wife Carrie of Cabot, AR, David and wife G.B. of Houston, TX; step daughters, Cathleen Bleier and husband Dale of Union Hall, VA, Cynthia Fletcher and husband James of Laurel, MD; twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Arthur enjoyed history, travel, reading financial news and most of all his family, where he never missed a birthday.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 2pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 24 Varsity St, Brevard. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
