Barbara Johnson

Barbara J. Johnson of Brevard died on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Transylvania Regional Hospital.
She was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice Bower Beebee. She was a graduate of Missouri Valley (Iowa) High School and attended Chaldron State College in Chaldron, Nebraska.
She was the Iowa State 4-H Health Champion in 1938, and one of eight National Health Champions chosen at the Chicago Exposition in December 1938. During World War II she worked for the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, DC, and later for the law firm of Roberts & McInnis in that city.
In December 1942 she was married to Malcolm Faust Johnson. They lived in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, NC during his Navy service and moved to Brevard, NC in 1948. She worked for Brevard College and for Ecusta Paper Corporation, later known as Olin Corporation, for 31 years, retiring as Administrative Assistant to the President of the Ecusta Paper and Film Group.
Mrs. Johnson was active in several local organizations having served as secretary of the Transylvania Youth Association for 50 years. She was a kind and loving person who did volunteer work with United Way, Red Cross, First United Methodist Church and the Transylvania Republican Party. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, reaching the status of Gold Life Master.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Malcolm Faust Johnson. She is survived by her two sons, Malcolm Blair Johnson of Huntsville, AL, and Warren Arthur Johnson and wife Linda of Etowah, NC; and two grandsons, Malcolm Arthur Johnson and Brandon David Johnson, both of Huntsville, AL, one niece and two nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Brevard with Rev. Mike Holder officiating. A reception will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.
She had expressed the hope that dear friends will plant a tree in her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Transylvania Youth Association, Inc. c/o Transylvania County Recreation Department, 1078 Ecusta Road, Brevard, NC 28712.
