Ben Eugene Burgess, 81, peacefully passed away on July 14th, 2012 at Brian Center, Brevard, NC.

A native of Newton, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Simon Ben Burgess and Rose Lackey Burgess. He was also preceded in death by his son, Britt and his brother, James.

After graduating from Duke University and serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, he began a career in banking with First Citizens Bank.  Ben retired as a Senior Vice President after thirty years.  He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and was active in all the communities where he and his family lived.  He was an avid golfer.

Ben is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rebecca Cannady Burgess; his son, Dr. Stephen Ben Burgess and wife, Angela Burgess, of Gastonia, NC; three grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, and Anna;  his sister, Nancy Burgess of Newton, NC;  a nephew, Gregg Burgess, of Catawba, NC;  a niece, Hope Cannady, of the home.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at First United Methodist Church, Brevard,  11am on Friday, July 20th, 2012 with the Revs. Mike Holder and Lauren Sims-Salata      officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.  Interment will be private at Davidson River Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Brevard First United Methodist Church, 325 North Broad Street, Brevard, NC 28712; or The Free Clinic of Transylvania County, P.O. Box 1135, Brevard, NC 28712.
