Betty K. "Robin" Daniel
Brevard - Betty Kerley "Robin" Daniel, civic activist, leader in the revitalization of downtown Asheville, and one of the founders of Bele Chere, died on May 8, 2010, following a long illness. She was 74.
Born in Louisburg, NC, in 1935 to Cleo Beatrice Kerley and Glayde Terry Kerley, Robin spent most of her life in Asheville and devoted her considerable talents and energies to celebrating the western North Carolina region.
A graduate of Wake Forest University, Robin taught English at public school in Richmond, VA, and later at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute. She also held staff positions at the NC Council on the Status of Women, at HandMade in America (researching western NC artists), and at the Asheville Citizen-Times. As a volunteer, Robin worked on several state and local political campaigns. She served as president of the Asheville League of Women Voters in the 1970s.
Robin is survived by her three daughters, Fori Kay, Noel Daniel, and Julie Duval; her sister, Kay Roberson; and five grandchildren. She will be remembered for her political passion, her support of social equality, and her appreciation of local art (along with her strict adherence to the rules of English grammar). She will be greatly missed by all who loved and respected her.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, May 15 at the Venue, 21 North Market Street, in downtown Asheville.
Moore Funeral Home is caring for the family.
