Bruce Evans

Bruce Haselton Evans, 73, 0f Brevard, NC, died Tuesday May 14, 2013 at The Elizabeth House.

Born in Rome, NY, he was the son of the late E. Arnold and Joan Haselton Evans.

He graduated from Choate, Amherst College and received an M .A. in art history from NYU's Institute of Fine Arts. After completing his studies in New York, he began work as a curator at the Dayton (Ohio) Art Institute in 1965. He was appointed Director of the DAI in 1974 and served in that capacity until 1991, when he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to serve as Director of the Mint Museum of Art.

During his career, he chaired numerous committees and was elected president of the Association of Art Museum Directors, the organization that represents the larger art museums in North America. He also was appointed by the American Association of Museums to serve on many art museum re-accreditation panels. He particularly enjoyed working on the acquisition by the DAI of the Ponderosa collection of contemporary art and on the creation of the Mint Museum of Craft & Design in Charlotte in 1999.

He retired in 2001 and became a "snowbird," spending winters in Sarasota, Florida and summers In the mountains of North Carolina, first in West Jefferson and then in Brevard. While living in Sarasota, he was a board member of the Longboat Key Arts Center and an advisory board member of the Ringling College of Art and Design. He enjoyed playing the guitar and keyboard, hunting, fishing, golf, photography and playing with various tech gadgets, beginning with the
Kaypro II computer and ending with the most recent versions of nearly every Apple product.

He married Margo Frey in 1962 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July 2012.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Barton Evans of Brevard, and Christopher Evans and his wife Leslie of Langley, WA; two grandchildren, Kate Evans of New York City and Zachary Evans of Bellingham, WA; Brother Edward Evans and wife Teresa of Naples, FL; sister Victoria Rinehart and husband Warren of Middlebury, VT; brother-in-law Toby Frey and wife Barbara Of Hamburg, NJ; sister-in-law Sylvia Frey and husband Jerry Irish of Claremont, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Throughout his illness, Evans retained his love of music, sense of humor and nimble wit. He was deeply moved by the visits and wonderful letters he received in recent months from friends and family. The Evans Family wishes to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and aides who cared for Bruce during his illness, especially the staff of Tore's Home #2 and the outstanding support of TC Hospice and of Four Seasons Hospice at Elizabeth House.

A memorial service at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Sarasota, Fl. will be scheduled at a later date.
