C. Edward Roy, 91, Brevard College chaplain and professor emeritus, died Saturday evening at Brian Center in Brevard.



The native of Birmingham, Ala., had lived in Brevard since 1944. He was the son of Eugene and Bessie Roy of Birmingham.



His 40-year tenure at Brevard College began in 1944 and ended with his retirement in 1984. He served as professor of religion, chair of the Humanities Division, chaplain, college marshal and speaker at many of the required chapel programs in the early years at the college. He also worked with student groups and was a member of a five-member committee that operated the college in 1968-1969 after the death of President Emmert McLarty while the Board of Trustees searched for a new president.



He was inducted into the Brevard College Hall of Fame during Homecoming ceremonies in October.



Roy also preached at many small Methodist churches in the area, including Mills River, Etowah and Selica. He was a member of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.



His community involvement included the Lions Club, Transylvania County Youth Associate and the Brevard Jaycees. He served as chairman of the county's Human Relations Council, where he welcomed and advised new recruits to the Schenck Job corps and the Transylvania County United Way. He was instrumental in starting Transylvania Christian Ministries, which operates the Sharing House, and the local Hospice Group.



His post-secondary education included degrees from Young Harris College, Piedmont College, Candler School of Theology at Emory University and Peabody College. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from High Point College in 1981.



He married Brona Nifong in 1947. After her death in 1993, he married Grace Munro Roy, a colleague at the college, in 1994.



During his years at the college, Roy made several trips to Israel and other Bible lands. He also participated in archeological digs in Israel. Other travels included Greece, Egypt, Scotland and Hong Kong and took several cruises to the Carribean and down the Mississippi River.



He is survived by his wife, who lives in College Walk Other survivors include his daughter, Becki R. Benfield and her husband, Roger, of Mills River; his grandson, Jason Benfield, and his wife, Amy-Ellen, of Washington, D.C.; his grandson, Shane Benfield, and his wife, Missy, of Dallas, Texas; two great-granddaughers, Sydney and Reese Benfield, also of Houston; his stepdaughter, Jenny Munro of Greer, S.C.; his stepson, Thomas "Chip" Munro, and his wife Linda, of Wellington, Fla.; and two step granddaughters, Shannon and Amanda Munro.



A private commitment service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mills River United Methodist Church and a memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Brevard United Methodist Church. The Revs. Mike Jordan, John Boggs and Kerry Purselle will officiate at the services.



Memorials may be made to Brevard United Methodist Church or Brevard College scholarship fund .
