Carmen Hillegas

Carmen Iris Lagares Hillegas, 62, of Brevard, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020. A native of Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Jose’ A. Lagares and the late Carmen E. Ruiz. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother and sister, Angel M. Osorio and Nelida Osorio and her daughter, Iris Y. Valencia.

She was very proud to be Puerto Rican and never afraid to show it. She loved life and the enjoyment that she received from it. She loved her family, and it showed in her attitude, her strength, her passion and her discipline, even though she sometimes believed “do as I say, not as I do.” She was loving but could be tough if she had to be.

She loved dancing and salsa music was her favorite.  She loved Hawaii and was a crime story fanatic which led to her wanting to be a judge. She was very loving and she'd give her last breath if it meant she'd help a loved one. She was always adventurous and was a fighter to the end.

Her survivors include her children, Diana Valencia, José L. Valencia, Luis A. Valencia and Iris A. Hillegas; her grandchildren Diana N. Ortiz, Josuelle Ortiz Jr., Xavier M. Valencia, Valentina A. Valencia, José Valencia and Joshua Verwey, Jessenia, Alina and Josiah Valencia; and great-grandchildren: Legaci and Jaielle Ortiz, Jayden, Justice and Anthony Valencia and Bella Verwey; and her life partner Elizabeth A. Norman.

A memorial Service for Carmen Lagares Hillegas will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 in the chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations with Father Shawn O’Neal officiating.
