He was born in Waynesville NC on November 27th 1926. Growing up he participated and excelled in both football and basketball ultimately earning a football scholarship to the University of Kansas. Prior to attending the University of Kansas, he entered the United States Navy at the age of 17 where he obtained the rank of Hospital Apprentice 1st Class while serving aboard the US Battleship Wisconsin during World War II.
While attending the University of Kansas, his summers were spent either in Detroit working on the auto assembly lines or back in Waynesville at the country club caddying. After graduating from Kansas he was recalled back into service during the Korean War.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he went on to attend the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation from UNC School of Dentistry, he moved to Brevard in the summer of 1956, when he established his dental practice off of Johnson St across from the current VFW. He continued to practice dentistry for the next 44 years before his retirement in 2000.
Aside from his dental practice in Brevard, he participated in local civic organizations including the Elks Club, Jaycees, VFW and the Transylvania Drug Taskforce. In his spare time, he was an avid supporter of the North Carolina Tarheels (especially basketball and football), the Brevard Blue Devils and later in life, the Clemson Tigers. He was always known around town and thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking to folks at Ingles or the Post Office. His 1965 orange Mustang was always a staple in and around Brevard.
He will always be remembered as a loving husband and father and for being both positive and upbeat whenever you encountered him.
