Caroline Boatwright

April 5, 1933 — July 3, 2012

North Carolina

Family and friends of Caroline Davis Boatwright are mourning the loss of a kind-hearted woman, a great friend and a valued church member and volunteer. They are also celebrating a life well-lived and the lasting value of family and service to others.

Born April 5, 1933 in Crossnore, NC to Charles W and Margaret G Davis, Caroline grew up on her family's farm on Island Ford Road in Brevard. After graduating in 1951 from Brevard High School, she attended Brevard College for two years and then finished her degree in Education at UNC-Chapel Hill.

During her college years she became a counselor at Rockbrook Camp and later the secretary to the Director of the camp. This position moved her to Charleston, SC where she met her husband of 51 years, William H Boatwright of Darlington, SC. They started their family in Mt. Pleasant, SC.  William's work moved them to Covington, Virginia in 1970 where Caroline taught fifth grade at Falling Spring Elementary School.

Upon retirement in 1993, she and William returned to her beloved Brevard where they bought a beautiful home off Cantrell Mountain Road. This wonderful property became the gathering place for many memorable celebrations with family and friends.

Gardening was undeniably her favorite pastime. She fed her family from the vegetable garden in her younger adult years and maintained an array of flower and shrub gardens in her yard throughout her life. She was also deeply fond of helping in Nan's Garden with the Garden Girls.

Caroline was actively involved in The Mathatasian Club of Brevard, a society of women devoted to learning through books, programs and field trips. Caroline's other interests included birding, weather watching, reading, and keeping her mind sharp with crossword puzzles, sudoku and Words with Friends. She also volunteered at St Philip's office and thrift store. Recently, she helped with a community homework club for elementary and middle school students.

Although Caroline preferred to stay on top of her mountain, she and William--sometimes with their daughters--made trips near and abroad. Her love of history and culture made the European river cruises her favorites.

Through living her authentic life, Caroline was blessed with making many friends in every place she lived. Her life was blessed with both recent and life long friends from Brevard, the Charleston area, and Covington.

Along with her husband, William, she is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Elisabeth and Grant Cobb and Caroline and Scott Collins as well as her grandchildren Margaret, Turner, Aaron, Sara and Nicole. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Baucus and her brother, Charles Davis, and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Caroline's life will be officiated by Reverend Rob Field at 2 PM on Saturday, July 7 at St Philip's Episcopal Church in Brevard with a reception immediately following in Miller Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Philip's Community Outreach Fund, 256 E. Main St, Brevard, NC 28712
