Charles Hudgins
On Saturday, June 12, 2010, Charles Hudgins, 87, of Pisgah Forest, NC, passed away after a long illness. Charles was born on June 16, 1922 to Rome and Lillie Blackwell Hudgins. He was married to the love of his life, Barbara Jean Kendrick Hudgins for nearly 66 years.
He served in the United States Army as a Private First Class specializing in the Heavy Artillery Division during World War II and was stationed at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. In 1952 Charles moved his family to Pisgah Forest and he retired from the Olin Matheson Corporation, after 35 years of service as a Chemical Operator.
He was a member of Pisgah Forest Baptist Church for 57 years, where he served as a member of the handyman committee, as a regular usher and was one of the founding fathers and cook of the annual fish fry that continues after 20+ years He was also a dedicated member of the Pisgah Forest Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Robert E. Lee Hudgins (Spartanburg, SC), Milton (Cecil) Hudgins, Franklin Hudgins (Cherokee Springs, SC), George Hudgins (Bat Cave, NC), Hubert Hudgins (Savannah, GA), Nora Hudgins Hammitt (Valley Falls, SC), and Agnes Hudgins Henderson (Newton, NC). In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Glenda Hudgins Lawson (Lilburn, GA) and David Jerome (Joe) Hudgins (Brevard, NC), six grandchildren, Ronald W. Buell and his wife Kristie (Pisgah Forest, NC), Gregory E. Buell and his wife Sherri (Duluth, GA), Christa C. Buell (Lawrenceville, GA), Karina Shay Hudgins (Orlando, FL),Bobby C. Lawson and his wife Alisa (Cumming, GA) and W. Matthew Lawson and his wife Enka (Dacula, GA). He also leaves behind 13 great grandchildren who loved him dearly and made him laugh often.
His friends and Sunday School members will serve as pallbearers. Active pallbearers will be Verlin Clarkson, Eddie Carter, Lloyd Owen, Charles Creasman, Johnny McJunkins, and Jim Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll Marshall, Tom Burton, Roland Blanton, Fred Parker, Marcus Laws and Fred Uebele. Special appreciation to : Parker Pace.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, June 14, 2010 at Pisgah Forest Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Blackwood and Gerald Willingham officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will follow at Pisgah Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the staff at The Oaks of Brevard, the Members of The Pisgah Forest Baptist Church, Dr. G. Ruffin Benton, III and staff.
