Charles Harrison Ziegler, 95, of Brevard, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 10th, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born in Greensboro, N.C., he moved to Brevard with his parents in 1946 and was married to Janette Raines, his "Nette," in 1950. He was in the U.S. Navy Reserves in the late '40s.
Charles worked at farming, the tannery in Brevard, and Olin, before going into logging. He was introduced to trout farming by his neighbor Robert “Bob” Polchow, and in this he found his niche. He became known as the grandfather of the trout industry in WNC and worked tirelessly to assist and educate his fellow trout farmers.
Along with trout farming, he and wife Janette started a Christmas tree farm. The perfect team, Charles and Janette were known for opening their home to business associates, aquaculture students, Project W.I.L.D. leaders (a Duke University organization), and anyone in need. All of these became dear friends.
Charles was a long time member of Cherryfield Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher. He also served on various committees including Pastor Search Committee and he worked on multiple projects for the church.
Charles was preceded in death in February of this year by his his wife of nearly 74 years, Janette. He was also preceded by his father, Charles Russell Ziegler; his mother, Ruth Elliot Ziegler (Waldrop); his step-father, Raymond Fidelia Waldrop, and two infant daughters, Polly Darcus and Katherine Ruth Ziegler.
He is survived his children: Charles Russell Ziegler and his wife, Vivien; Van Blake Ziegler; Rhonda Brown and her husband, Kenny; and Sandra Lee Ziegler. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Also by his long-time and esteemed friend and chess mate, Robert Cilley.
After a private graveside, a memorial service will be held to honor both Charles and Janette at Cherryfield Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 20, 2024. An informal visitation will follow.
