Daryl Hughes

Daryl Loyd Hughes, 71, of Brevard, NC passed away on October 18, 2016 at Transylvania Regional Hospital. He was a son of the late Elizabeth Louise Plain Hughes and Floyd Mellor Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother; Joseph Hughes.
Daryl graduated from Waverly High School where he played football, basketball, track and baseball. He then graduated from the University of Kansas with a BS in Chemical Engineering, he worked for Shell Oil Company for over 28 years as a Senior Staff Engineer. During Daryl's career at Shell he contributed to many innovative process improvements and received many awards for his efforts. Daryl was also fortunate to present papers on his process improvements at technical conferences in the Netherlands and Germany.
He served on the Sherwood Forest Finance Committee, the Golf Committee and the Lakes and Dams Committee. He also was a member of the Sherwood Forest Golf Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Elma Dwyer Hughes, one sister; Susan Hughes of Hallsville, TX, six brothers; Leslie Hughes of Topeka, KS, Allen Hughes of Plano, TX, Harold Hughes of Plano, TX, Patrick Hughes of Wichita, KS, Michael Hughes of Colleyville, TX and Dan Hughes of Overland Park, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held for Daryl Hughes at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Shawn O'Neal officiating. The inurnment will follow immediately in the niche garden at the church. The family will receive friends following the inurnment, in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Everyone is invited to remain for the reception.
Daryl loved travel, WWII history, vegetable gardening, and all kinds of sports. He was an avid golfer during most of his adult life. He was very charitable, especially when it came to the needs of children.
