Denny Allen Liegerot, Sr. 75 died Monday November 30 at Duke University Hospital following a hard fought battle with Leukemia.
Denny was born in Miami, Florida August 18, 1934. He graduated from Coral Gables High School and continued his education at the University of Florida and the University of Miami. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
He was accepted into the Marine Aviation Cadet program at Pensacola Florida February 1958 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the USMC on May 21, 1958. After completion of primary flight training, he was sent to Kingsville, Texas for advanced training and received his Navel Aviator Wings August 5, 1958. From there, he was sent to NAS Pensacola as a Primary Flight Instructor on the T-34. His next assignment was with Marine Attack Squadron VMA 223 based out of El Toro, CA where he flew the FJ-4B 'Fury". Upon leaving active duty he was attached to Marine fighter squadron VMF351 based at NAS Atlanta flying the F-8 Crusader, known as last of the Gunfighters. He remained in the USMC active Reserve until 1966; but stayed in the inactive reserve until 1974 when he retired with the rank of Major.
His interest in aviation never wavered. He was hired by Delta Air Lines in 1962 and flew Captain for most of his 32 years with them. He remained in the Greater Atlanta area through out his career, living primarily in Gwinnett County. He also served as Chairman of the Gwinnett County Airport Authority. He and his wife moved to Brevard in 1995 and immediately became involved in programs and activities to benefit the community. As one of his Marine Corp and Delta Airline friends remarked,"Denny was a fine Marine, a terrific pilot and a wonderful leader of men". Denny was always a man on the move. He enjoyed playing 1st division amateur soccer, running, competing in off-road motorcycle races, and hiking, but above all else he cherished his family.
