It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Jean Waldrop “Dot” Bryson, 91, announce her peaceful passing on Monday, January 4, 2021. She was a native of Transylvania County, born on her parent’s farm on March 26, 1929. She was a graduate of Brevard High School and a star member of the girl’s basketball team. She, along with three brothers and four sisters, grew up on the farm their grandfather started bordering the French Broad River, where she learned to swim and canoe and was mentored by her brother and uncle to become a proficient horse trainer and rider. Dot was a devout member of First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and participated in many Christmas and Easter cantatas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Guy Lance Bryson; her parents Van Buren and Katie Bracken Waldrop; brothers V.B., Ray, and Auburn, and sisters Margaret, Toby and Georgia; granddaughter Amy Buchanan and her husband Garrett, and her son-in-law David Crane.
Loved ones that will miss her until they meet again are her three children, Carolyn, Lance and Phyllis. The loved ones she loved the most and called her “Nana” were her grandbabies: granddaughter Portia Tinsley (Chris). Great-grandchildren Lauren, Tyler, Tony, Ryan and Austin; great-great-grandchildren Brynnlyn, Anniston, Landrie, Lukas and Jax. Left to cherish her memory is her beloved sister Jeanette Ziegler along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
A personal tribute by Great-granddaughter, Lauren Gmerek: “Yesterday we lost one of my favorite people, my Nana. She taught me so many things from how to shuck corn, pick a hickory switch, too how to love and follow Jesus. I can’t think of a time when she wasn’t there for me. We always joked she loved the boys more, but when I think about it, being the only girl had its perks! She was a place of wisdom and kindness, and I am so thankful that she played such an integral part of my life. Over the past few years she may not have remembered as much but she still loved to love on her great-great grandchildren and was as wise as ever! I love you Nana, give Granddaddy the biggest kiss for me!”
A graveside service was held on Sunday, January 10, 2021. No other services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church in Brevard, 94 S. Gaston St., Brevard, Nc 28712.
