Mrs. Dovie Elma White Coan, age 97, of Pisgah Forest, died the evening of November 18, 2019, after a brief stay at Tore’s Home in Brevard.
She was born December 8, 1921, in Rosman, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Alfred Marcus White and Buna Elma Sloan White.
Dovie was preceded in death by two brothers, AM White and Earl White and two sisters, Amy Neal and Edna White.
A devoted wife, mother and homemaker, she centered her life around her family and her church, living her life in a way that was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Brevard. She loved music and sang in the church choir for more than 50 years.
A graduate of Brevard College who liked adventure, in 1941 she became one of the first women to obtain her private pilot’s license as the only female in the college’s aviation program. Always energetic, she loved golf, square dancing and baseball. But most of all, Dovie loved her family dearly and so enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dovie is survived by her husband Gil Coan. They recently celebrated 78 years of marriage. In addition, survivors include two sons: Gil Coan, Jr. (Faye) and Kevin Coan (Gina) of Brevard; grandchildren Amy Templeton (Jay), Jay Coan (Nora), Casey Coan, Katie Thompson, Tyler Coan (Mercedes) and great-grandchildren, Hannon Templeton, Laney Templeton, Carter Coan, Carson Coan, Braylon Thompson, Mason Thompson, Charlotte Coan and Claire Coan. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her kindness, her wit and sense of humor and her gentle spirit.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at First United Methodist Church of Brevard with the Reverends Michael Holder and Lauren Sims-Salata officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers and to honor Dovie’s love of children and music, the family suggests memorial gifts to the WCP Playground Fund or the Children’s Music Ministry at the First United Methodist Church of Brevard, 325 N. Broad Street, Brevard, NC, 28172.
