Earl Johnson

Earl B. "Whitey" Johnson, 84, passed away on January 23, 2014 at The Oaks of Brevard, North Carolina. He was a son of the late Lewis Clyde Johnson and Grace Carland Johnson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; Billy and Dickie Johnson and two sisters; Mildred Johnson Butler and Betty Johnson Elingburg.

Earl was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he also served the youth as a Youth Leadership Counselor. He was Past President of Brevard Youth Football League. He coached Transylvania County Little League for over 30 years. Whitey played baseball for the Western NC Industrial League with the Olin Mathieson Indians as a shortstop and as a third-baseman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Martha Jaye Johnson, one son; Jeffrey Earl Johnson and wife Debbie S. Halpin of Colbert, GA, one daughter; Julie Wallace and husband Brandon of Fletcher, NC, five grandsons; Jacob Keefer, Canaan Wallace, Jordan Johnson, Cameron Johnson, Preston Johnson, two granddaughters; Brooke Armstrong and husband Wesley, Emily Halpin, one great granddaughter; Kennedy Armstrong; and one brother; Jack M. Johnson and wife Sharon of Hendersonville, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 26, 2014 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Holder officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
