Eleanor J. Thoben, 87, of Brevard, passed away on November 30, 2015 after a long illness. She was born in St. Albans, Vermont to the late William and Mabel Young. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Thoben. She is survived by her daughter, Karen K. Thoben of Kingston, New York and lives with the "Angels in the Arc."
After graduation from St. Mary's High School and Becker College in Worcester, MA, she became a civil service employee for the War Department in Japan. Her official wedding ceremony was at the American Consuls office in Tokyo. The formal Catholic Church ceremony was in the chapel of Tokyo General Hospital. Her husband was in Army Intelligence during the war and later in the foreign service of the United States.
Her daughter was born in Honolulu when she worked for the surgeon's office at Camp Smith Marine Corps headquarters. Retirement was in New Paltz, NY and she was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She moved to Brevard, NC where she was president of the condo association for six years. She was a member of Deer Lake Singers Group, a member of the Transylvania Arts Guild and the N.A.R.F.E.
She travelled the world with her true friend and companion, David Hill. They visited countries of their ancestors and countries they had been to during the war. They painted on canvas, from their memories as well as from photos, the highlights of their travels.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church since 1995. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Shawn O'Neal officiating. Burial will at the family plot in Gardner, NY.
