Elizabeth Biggs Owens

Brevard - Elizabeth Biggs Owens, 93, died March 15, 2009 at The Oaks/Ivy Hill. She was a native of Lumberton, NC and had been a Transylvania County resident for the past 12 years.
She is the widow of Otto P. Owens who died in 1985. She is the daughter of the late Mollie Beverly Biggs and John Thomas Biggs. She was preceded in death by four brothers; T. Beverly Biggs, H. Franklin Biggs, Dr. J. Irvin Biggs and Carlyle B. Biggs.

She was a member of the Class of 1937 at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Lumberton where she worked in the Kindergarten and as a Sunday school teacher for many years; she and her husband owned and operated Rocky River Campground in Chimney Rock, NC for over 30 years. She was a member of the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce and the Chimney Rock Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a lifelong member of the Lumberton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and an advisor for the Rainbow Girls. She was an active member of the Lumberton Town and Country Garden Club.
She is survived by a son: Dr. Thomas Glenn Owens, two grandchildren: John Ryan Owens and Molly Elizabeth Owens all of Lenoir, NC; a daughter: Ginger Owens Long and husband, Rev. Lloyd Long of Brevard, NC, a sister: Louise Biggs Gray of LaGrange, NC, a sister-in-law; Anne Moss Biggs of Lumberton, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.
For the past five years "Miss Lib of Lumberton" has been a resident of The Oaks/Ivy Hill of Brevard where she continued to enjoy social interaction with the care giving staff, the special groups of children from churches and schools who came to sing and minister to her and enjoy her youthful spirit and enthusiasm, especially at the Halloween, Christmas, and musical celebrations. The residents and staff will miss her special smile and a kiss on the hand.

Funeral services were held 12:00 PM, Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Floyd's Memorial Chapel with Revs. Joe Bounds, Lloyd Long and Tim Little officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial was at New Hollywood Cemetery.
