Elizabeth Trantham

June 25, 1936 — April 21, 2020

Brevard, NC

Elizabeth Norene Trantham, 83, of Brevard, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Harry England Trantham, Sr., their four children, Sheila, Tony, Elizabeth and Harry Jr., eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Born Elizabeth Norene Dow in Franklin, MA on June 25, 1936 to Horace and Elizabeth Dow. Norene, as she was known, graduated Valedictorian from Franklin High School in 1954 and Framingham Nursing School in 1957. Following graduation, she spent her early twenties entertaining her nieces and nephews on Sunday walks to church and cooking large family dinners at her parents’ home. In 1961, she joined the Air Force with her best friend, Grace, and drove to San Antonio Texas in a convertible, accepting a position as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. In San Antonio, she met Harry. They married in 1963 and settled in Greenville, S.C. where they raised their family and worked side by side in Harry’s ophthalmology practice-moving to Brevard in 2016.

For Norene, the 1970s and 1980s were a cacophony of children’s laughter and “disagreements” in the way back seat of her station wagon as she happily chauffeured piles of kids to clubs and activities all over town. Indeed, motherhood, grandmotherhood, and great-grandmotherhood were her essence, but it was her deep faith in Christ, her profound love for her husband, and her volunteer activism that truly defined her. She will be remembered for her sharp wit and her big smile that lit up the room when her husband walked in. For many, she was Norene. For us, she was the best wife, mom, Grammy, Great Grammy, and Aunt Non ever. She is missed and will be forever loved.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private graveside service will be held. A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
