Elizabeth Featherstone Riley Kapp Tyson



Brevard - Elizabeth Featherstone Riley Kapp Tyson died Marsh 18, 2008 at Brian Center of Brevard.

She was born May 26, 1912 in Macon, GA, the daughter of Mary Glenn Featherstone Riley and Laurence Holdridge Riley. She graduated from Southwestern University in Memphis where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She received her degree in Library Science at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville where she was a member of the library school faculty for a number of years. She was a librarian at Shorter College in Rome, GA in 1939.

She married J. Lehman Kapp on September 5, 1940 in Nashville, TN and moved to Brevard where he was employed. She was first hired to set up a library for Ecusta employees and then took on the newly formed Transylvania County Library from 1944 until her retirement in 1982.

After the death of her first husband in 1977, she married J. Douglas Tyson in November of 1983. He preceded her in death in 1987.

She loved every minute of her time as librarian and in May of 2007 she was the recipient of the annual "Women Who Make a Difference Award" recognizing the past, present and future leaders of the county, presented by the Brevard Chapter of the American Association of University Women.

She is survived by cousins Captain Todd Ackerman of Beale AFB, CA and Robin Ackerman of Red Banks MS, as well as her sister-in-law and best friend, Mrs. Ethel Armstrong of Winston Salem, her niece and husband Pat and Don Johnson and family of Chads Ford, PA, her nephew and wife Gene and Lynn Armstrong and family of Kiawah Island, SC and her stepson and wife, Jim and Carol Tyson and family of Brevard.

A private graveside service was held at St. Paul's in-the-Valley Cemetery on Friday, March 21, 2008 and a memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, March 27, 2008 at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
