Ella Griffin

Brevard, North Carolina

Ella Jeanne Hardee Griffin, 88, of Brevard,formerly of Asheville, peacefully passed away in her home on July 28, 2015. Jeanne was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 7, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Franklin Hardee and Helen Holbrook Hardee. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother Frank Hardee and sisters Irene Hardee and Kathleen Hardee Stowe.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, William Lapsley Griffin Sr.; her children, William "Bill" Lapsley Griffin Jr. and his wife Lynne of Henderson, NC; Andrew "Drew" Hardee Griffin and wife of Florence, SC; and Kathleen "Kady" Griffin Hendrix and her husband Ty of Brevard; and her grandchildren: Elizabeth Griffin Moore, Mary Griffin, Bill Hendrix and Jack Hendrix; and her great granddaughter Aylett Moore. She was very close with her other surviving family members, Richard and Alice Griffin of Asheville and their children Richard and Lynne Griffin; Eddie and Aylett Burchfiel; Todd and Stephanie Griffin; Abigail Griffin and Rees Perry ; Trooper and Barbara Irving of Canyon Lake, Texas; William Stowe Jr.; Glen and Mary Stowe; and Jane Stowe McDade of Charlotte, NC ; Beth and Keith Hale of Winston Salem, NC.

The youngest of four children, Jeanne grew up in Moultrie, Ga. She graduated from Queens College in Charlotte, NC in 1948. She then married William Lapsley Griffin of Asheville, NC. Jeanne and Bill fell in love on the day they met and were always inseparable. They lived in Asheville for over 60 years raising their family. She was an amazing Spanish teacher at Asheville Country Day for 20 years. She loved her students and guided them to a better life. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She directed the adult and children's choirs and taught Sunday school for many years. Her friends and family surrounded her all of her life. In her retirement years she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren as well as mountain biking and tennis. Jeanne will be remembered as a gentle spirit, and a loving person who was always available to listen, and be a friend to all.
Funeral Services for Jeanne Griffin will be held at 12:00 noon, on Thursday, July 30, 2015 in the chapel of Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
