Emily Ann English was born in 1931 in Durham. NC, to William Hall Smith and Mabel Claire (Yarborough) Smith, Ann (Smith) English died at home in Brevard last week.



After attending schools in Durham, Oak R, TN, and Brevard, Ann finished her education at Appalachian State Teaches College where she majored in music and played on the women's basketball team.



Marrying her childhood friend Jerry English of Caswell County in 1953, she embarked on motherhood as a military wife with sojourns in KY, NY, AL, TN, VA, Puerto Rico, and Germany.  When her husband served in Vietnam, Ann and their three children moved back to Brevard where she taught piano and served as an organist for worship services, weddings and funerals all over western NC.



After her husband died, Mrs. English worked at Ecusta as a professional baker. For many years, Ann was music director at Loving Hands Day Care in Etowah and president of the Transylvania County Symphony Orchestra. Recently, Mrs. English was a member of the BPOE Lodge where she helped raise funds for the Elks' scholarship and shoe programs.



A lover of good music, the mountains and fresh strawberries, Ann is survived by her children; Karen (John), David, Valerie (Ronnie); her four grandchildren; Jillian (Toney), Tamrah, Fredrick, and William; great granddaughter Madeline. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church on Sunday January 20, 2013 at 4:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Ann's name to the Organ fund at ST. Timothy's United Methodist, 1020 Asheville Hwy, Brevard, NC. Church or the Louise P. Miller Memorial Scholarship fund at Brevard College.
