Geoffrey Edward Shepherd, 74, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Charles George VA Medical Center.
He was born June 17, 1948, in Essex, England and is a son of the late John and Stella Shepherd. At age 17, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1967 and was deployed to Vietnam. Following his service in Vietnam, he returned to Florida and worked in a construction business.
Geoff moved to North Carolina and shortly after became employed with the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Department. While at the Sheriff’s Department he rose through the ranks, to the rank of Chief Deputy. He was appointed to fulfill Sheriff Bobby Orr’s term upon Bobby’s unexpected death. He retired from the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Department as the Sheriff in 2006.
During his retirement he and his wife, Linda, enjoyed traveling the globe and going on numerous cruises. They also enjoyed their winter months RV’ing with friends in Summerdale, Al.
Geoff was a Master Mason in the Dunn’s Rock Masonic Lodge Brevard, NC and was also the Master Mason in 2004. He was also a Shriner, member of the NC Fraternal order of Police and a long standing NCFOP State Trustee.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda Shepherd of Pisgah Forest, NC, two sons; Frankie Pogue (Crystal) of Pisgah Forest, NC, Chris Pogue of Pisgah Forest, NC, two grandchildren; Hunter and Ashton Pogue of Pisgah Forest, NC, one brother; Anthony Trevor Shepherd (Linda) of Greenville, SC and several nieces and nephews.
No public service is planned.
The family would like to thank the Asheville VA Medical Center staff for their compassion and assistance during this time.
