Gerald Janowitz

Gerald (Jerry) Saul Janowitz, 74, of Brevard, NC passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017 at Transylvania Regional Hospital. He was born April 5, 1943 in New York City to the late Leo and Yetta Caress Janowitz.

He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and received a BS degree in Aerospace Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1963 (Summa Cum Laude) and obtained a PhD in Mechanics from Johns Hopkins University in 1967.

More, importantly, he met his future wife, Barbara, at Hopkins. They were married in 1968 and their son David was born in 1971. After teaching for seven years at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, he joined the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) in 1975. He published over 70 research papers, directed 10 doctoral dissertations and 15 masters theses. He also served as director of graduate programs for this department for 30 years. He retired from NCSU in 2012 and became Professor Emeritus and he and his wife moved to Brevard NC.

Jerry is survived by his wife Barbara, his son David, daughter-in-law, Hope and their children Hannah and Sam and his sister, Annette.
