Gladys Mackey

Gladys Norris Mackey, 85, a long-time resident of Brevard, Pisgah Forest, and Asheville, NC, passed away December 25, 2014 at the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Katy, TX. She was born Oct. 16, 1929 in Brevard, NC. to the late Carl and Ola Galloway Norris. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack, grandson, Ben, her mother, and siblings, Harold Norris, Ruth Norris Williams, and Helen Norris Mahaffey.

She grew up in Brevard and met the love of her life, Jack Mackey, in first grade at the old Pisgah Forest Elementary School located on Davidson River Road. After graduating from Brevard High School in 1947, they married on April 3, 1948 in Clayton, Georgia. She worked in the Endless Belt department at Ecusta until shortly before the birth of their son in 1949 when she became a homemaker. She will be remembered by everyone who knew her for her cooking, especially her cornbread, cakes, cookies, and home-canned green beans. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She loved to travel and had visited many places in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Pacific Islands, but her favorite place was home in the mountains of North Carolina.

She is survived by her son Ronny and wife Dianne of Whitmire, South Carolina, daughters Sharon, husband Bill and grandson David of Vermont, Pam and husband Leonard Firth of Brookshire, Texas. She is also survived by nephews Frank Norris, Mike Williams, Vernon Williams, and nieces Jean Longstreet, Margaret Dobrowitsky, Donna Mahaffey, Lynn Cermak.

The family would like to acknowledge a special appreciation to the staff of the Cinco Ranch Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Katy, Texas who cared for her during the last 3 years and to the staff with Katy Eldercare and At Your Home.

A memorial gathering will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 17, 2014 at Moore Funeral Home, 100 North Country Club Road, Brevard, North Carolina with burial to follow in Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Dignity Memorial in Katy, Texas and Moore Funeral Home in Brevard, North Carolina..
