Gordon Kendall

Winston Salem, North Carolina

GORDON J. KENDALL, of Winston-Salem, departed this life on February 22nd, 2015 at the age of 87. Born on June 22, 1927 in Jamaica, New York, he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Agriculture. He served in the US Army Air Corps just before the end of WWII and later became a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. In the 1960's, he was an outspoken, courageous, and much-admired advocate of modernization in the Catholic Church. He organized civil rights marches and other interracial activities, participated in peace demonstrations, and was active in the Ecumenical Movement and in campus ministry at North Carolina State University. He married in 1967, taking secular employment and earning a graduate degree in Public Health Administration.

In his later years, he turned toward New Age philosophy and was a founding member of Schola Contemplationis, an international network of contemplatives. For many years, he led the Discovery Class at Knollwood Baptist Church.

He is survived by his former wife, Anastasia Coralyn Theodoridis; two children, Mark Gordon Kendall and Erin Michelle Kendall; 5 grandchildren: Kelly Anne Kendall, Ryan Paul Kendall, Connor Gordon Kendall, Sydney Elizabeth Norman, and Jackson Jeffrey Norman; his sister, Lorraine Kendall Fitzgerald; and numerous nieces and nephews.

On Thursday, February 26th, Knollwood Baptist Church will have a gathering beginning at 4:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall, followed by a memorial service at 4:30 pm.
