Helen Elizabeth Boyce



Brevard - Helen Elizabeth Ashley Boyce of College Walk Retirement Community, Brevard, NC died July 11, 2008. Her death from cancer followed a long enjoyable and productive life. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brother Charles.



Born in 1924 to Luther Mark Ashley and wife Elizabeth Muirhead Leggat Ashley, Helen attended Pontiac High School. At the University of Michigan, Helen earned a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Music. After graduation, she was employed as an instructor of piano at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC.



In December 1951, Helen married Stephen Gaddy Boyce. The couple had two sons, Stephen Ashley and Thomas Mark. During the next 50 years, the family lived and worked in six different states. At every opportunity Helen became a dedicated volunteer in a local hospital and participated in various educational activities for children. Her enthusiasm for building civil societies was based on demanding high standards for justice, honesty, and concern for others.



A wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, Helen's family was her greatest joy. She is survived by her husband, her son Stephen and wife of Winston-Salem, NC and her grandson William and wife of San Antonio, TX. In Canberra, Australia, Helen is survived by her son Thomas and wife and three grandchildren; Seneca, Cadel, and Wyatt.



Moore Funeral Home is in charge of the cremation services. Her ashes will be buried later when her husband's ashes are placed in a military cemetery.



The family expresses their thanks to the residents and staff of College Walk for their kindness and support during Helen's illness. In addition, the family appreciates very much the special care given to Helen by Hospice of Transylvania Community Hospital.
