Helen Margaret (Young) Childs was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1912. In her childhood she experienced early 20th century farm life when she visited her venerable grandmother near Bloomington, Wisconsin. She graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts degree with English as a first major and music as a second. She was employed in the Iowa public schools, first in Louden, then in Cedar Rapids during the Depression.
On July 6, 1939 she was married to Morris Erwin Childs whose family also lived in Cedar Rapids. In 1940 the couple had a daughter and in 1944, they had a son. Toward the end of World War II they moved to Dearborn, Michigan when Morris found employment at Harry Ferguson as a drafting engineer. A few years later Morris became employed by the Ford Motor Company. During this time Helen did some substitute teaching in the Dearborn public school system. In the later 1960's Helen found permanent employment in the Garden City public school system where she taught music and art. In the early 1970's she received her Master's degree in early education. She retired after working for seven years in the Garden City school system.
Helen and her husband traveled extensively after their retirement. Their travels included Canada, the western states of California, Arizona and Texas (in McAllen and Pharr South where they lived in their trailer for two years); Mexico and Florida, where Helen's sister and husband lived. Helen and Morris settled in Hendersonville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, in 1982. They would travel back to Texas as "snowbirds" during the winter months, and briefly visiting their daughter and son and his family during the summers. Helen remained in Hendersonville at Lakemoor Village for twenty years. In early 1994 she and a friend took a month's tour of Australia, New Zealand and the Fiji Islands. She enjoyed growing flowers in her Japanese garden and taking trips to Florida and western North Carolina with her daughter. Helen moved to College Walk in Brevard in October 2005. She especially enjoyed music concerts at Brevard College and the Brevard Music Center. She loved piano, was a skilled musician, and enjoyed playing in her later years. Helen was a life-long student of Christian Science and an active church member.
She is survived by her sister, Marcella Wick and her husband Joe of New Port Richey, Florida; son David Childs and wife Eileen of Tecumseh, Michigan; grandson Arron Childs; granddaughter Maranda Daniels and husband Wesley and great-grandson Justin and great-granddaughter Kyra Daniels.
