HELEN L. PEELER
Helen Louise Daniels Peeler, 87, of Pisgah Forest, passed peacefully at Hospice House of Rutherford County in Forest City on Tuesday, June 30, 2009.
A native of Transylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Lemuel Lloyd and Olivia Morris Daniels and the beloved wife of the late Earl Evans Peeler, US Army, Ret. who died in 1991.
During WW II, she became a US Coast Guard SPAR and proudly served for the duration of the war. While her husband was a member of one of the first US Army Units to serve in the Korean War, she worked at the US Army Hospital, Osaka, Japan and additionally volunteered as an ambulance driver bringing the wounded from the Medical Evacuation planes to the hospital. After returning to Transylvania County, she served as the Western Regional Selective Service Director until her retirement.
She is survived by three sisters, Carolyn (Mrs. Ted) Owen of Etowah; Thelma (Mrs. Harold) Siniard of Brevard; Mrs. Mary Ann Galyon of Brevard; beloved nieces, Heidi Owen of Rutherfordton; Kathy (Mrs. Lynn) Davis of Defiance, Ohio; nephews, Bryan (Jennifer) Owen of Chesnee, SC and Daniel (Suzi) Galyon of Cape Coral, Florida. Other beloved family members are Daniel Owen, Robert and Michael Galyon, Clay and Casey Davis, and Nathan and Nicklas Galyon.
A graveside service will be held at Davidson River Cemetery Extn. at 2:00 pm Wednesday, July 1, 2009 with Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating.
