ISABEL SMITH WHITE

"Do what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, the way you are supposed to do it, always to the best of your ability - with a good attitude, and most importantly with a smile on your face."

Fay Isabel Smith White said it, believed it, taught it, and lived it - for more than 90 years. She learned those life lessons and others growing up during the depression era in the Bishopville, SC home of her parents, the late J. Manly and Fay Truluck Smith. A self-educated butcher and grocer, her father taught his children that if you are lucky enough to have something, it is your duty to share it. Their home was open, generous, welcoming, and there was always plenty of food on the table where fun, tall tales, politics, religion, Scrabble and Monopoly were allowed. She and her brothers Jared, Erby and Eugene and sister Rouie continued the caring traditions of generous hospitality throughout their lives.

When she died at Tore's Home in Brevard, NC on July 31, 2017, after years of declining health and devastating damage from a stroke she suffered early in 2014, she left her family, friends, and devoted caregivers smiling. Her sense of humor stayed with her, as did the feisty spirit that enabled her to cope with many difficult challenges.

A longtime resident of Camden, she was widowed by Pop's death on March 14, 2015 after more than 70 years of marriage. Thomas Britton White, Jr. was not only her husband and father of her children, but also her bridge, dance, travel, golf and verbal sparring partner. Their sense of humor was legend and they loved good times with a large extended family and a wide circle of friends. More importantly, they believed in serving God, the church and their community. Tom and Isabel were members of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church and the Wimberly Sunday School Class for more than 65 years. She was a Sunday School teacher, Circle member, and an eager participant in church activities.

Although a talented executive secretary who worked in several offices over the years, Isabel White was primarily a homemaker. She loved to cook, sew, knit, needlepoint and read rather than clean. She volunteered in the community and was recognized by the state for her efforts on behalf of the Department of Social Services.

She is survived by her daughter Winonah Faye White Coan and son-in-law Gilbert Fitzgerald Coan, Jr. of Brevard, NC, her older son Thomas Britton White, III and daughter-in-law Paige Randolph White of Long Beach, CA, and her younger son Andrew David White and daughter-in-law Debra Stueber White of Lexington, SC. She is also survived by grandchildren Thomas Britton White, IV, Amelia Coan Templeton, James Lawrence Coan, Andrew Stueber White, Benjamin Lee White and Lucas Aaron White and their spouses (and significant others) and seven great-grandchildren Other survivors include her youngest brother Paul Anderson Smith and his wife Panagiota of Easley, SC and her beloved sisters-in-law Salome White, Ann White, Marian White, Mary Alice Smith, Ann Smith and her brother-in-law. The Celebration of Life for Isabel Smith White will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden, SC, with the Rev. Steve Patterson officiating. The family will receive visitors in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the services

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, 1206 Lyttleton Street, Camden, SC, 29020 for Food for the Soul or the Lyttleton Learning Place for Children.
