James Gordon Byrd, 76, died at his residence on Friday, September 23, 2011 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Brevard to the late James Robert and Pauline Jackson Byrd.

Gordon was a member of Carsons Creek Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Mission Committee Leader and Prayer Team Coordinator. He was also a representative of the church to the Transylvania County Baptist Association. He was in the US Army and served in Germany. He was the Coordinator of the Fire and Rescue for Western North Carolina. He was the former Fire Chief of Brevard. He worked as a printer for the Transylvania Times.

Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Mable Rathbone Byrd; sons, James Thomas "Tommy" Byrd and wife Beverly of Sherrils Ford, NC, Chuck Lowe of Brevard, and Robert Lowe of Missouri; daughters, Cathy Nicholson and husband Mike of Brevard, Teresa Queen and husband David of Balsam Grove, Cindy Gosnell and husband Austin of Etowah, and Denise Lowe of Brevard; one sister, Shirley Shipman and husband Charles of Brevard; fifteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 2pm at Carsons Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Waters officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 26, 2011 from 6pm - 8pm at Moore Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Carsons Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
