James Furman Owen, 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at his home after a brief struggle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. A native of Transylvania County, he was the youngest and last surviving of the eleven children of the late James Robert "Robbie" Owen and Lura Sylvitha Galloway Owen of the Silversteen Community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Callie Marie Owen; three brothers: Laury, Olan and L.E. Owen; seven sisters: Beulah O. Jones, Opal O. Broome, Kanzie O. Anders, Leota O. Moore, twins Dorothy Bee Owen and Donna Vee O. Callahan and Oleda O. King who was a twin to L.E. Owen; nephews: Wayne King, Lionel Jones and Larry Owen.
An Army veteran during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Owen served with the Army Corps of Engineers assigned to the 5th Air Force in Korea from 1952-1953. A graduate of Winston-Salem Barber College, he was the owner and operator of Rosman Barber Shop until his retirement in December 1999. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing.
A believer since the age of sixteen, his joy in life was to sing of his Savior and his Heavenly home. Furman was a life-long student of the Bible and held many positions in the church. Most recently, he directed music at Amazing Grace Baptist Church.
Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Rogers Owen of the home; three sons: James Owen (Carolyn) of Brevard, Stanley Owen (Darla) of Brevard, Robert Owen (Linda) of Lake Toxaway; seven grandchildren: Christy, Ameran, Cassie, Cole, Charly Ann, Christopher and Travis; fifteen great-grandchildren: Christian, Kaitlyn, Kyleigh, Kinslee, Khloe, Bailey, Mason, Gracin, Owen, Gwen, Myna, Journey Marie, Gentree, Reagan and Kennedy; sister-in-law Paulette Owen of Lake Toxaway; ten nephews and eight nieces.
Funeral Services for James Furman Owen will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Cathey's Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Gary McCarter, Rev. Allen Aiken and Rev. Tony Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Mack McCall Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the North Carolina National Guard and the Transylvania County Honor Guard. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pall-bearers and his many friends in the ministry will serve as honorary pall-bearers. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations.
