James Jerry Stamey, 81, of Brevard, died Monday, April 15, 2013 at Transylvania Regional Hospital.
Jerry was born January 15, 1932, in Brevard, N.C. and lived most of his life in Transylvania County, and is the son of the late James N. Stamey and the late Clara C. Stamey, brother of the late Harold Lee Stamey, Betty Stamey Foster and Billie Stamey Bolt.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Huffman Stamey, of the home and his daughter, Susan Martha Stamey of Seneca, S.C.; sisters-in-law Mary H. Osborne of Brevard, N.C. Louise H. Moore of Mills River and Betty H. Richards of Chattanooga, TN, a brother-in-law J.D. Bolt of Brevard.
He graduated from Brevard High School in 1950 with a perfect 12 year attendance record of which he was very proud. He played baseball, basketball, and football and was selected to play in the Optomist Bowl his senior year; he was elected president of his senior class.
He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and returned to Brevard and graduated from Brevard College in 1957 where he pitched baseball for the Tornadoes and was president of the Sophomore Class.
Jerry was employed by E.I. DuPont in 1957 and worked at the Brevard Plant for 40 years prior to his retirement as Maintenance Supervisor and served as the Photo Products Maintenance Training Representative for over fifteen years.
He is a past Member of the Brevard Jaycees, Brevard Toastmasters Club, Transylvania County Planning Board, Glen Cannon Country Club and served as Secretary of the Brevard Elks Lodge for 17 years. He also served on the 911 Emergency System Implementation Committee for Transylvania County and the city of Brevard in 1986. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Jerry was a charter member of Boy Scout Troop #4 and had many fond memories of the trips and overnight outings in Pisgah National Forest under the outstanding leadership and guidance of Scoutmasters Charlie Moore, Albert Lyday, and David Norton.
The family will receive friends Thursday, April 18, 2013 at Moore Funeral Home 12:30-2:00PM. A graveside service will follow at Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery at 2:00 PM with the Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church, Rev. Mike Holder officiating.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Generation to Generation Fund, 3235 Broad Street, Brevard, NC 28712.
