Jane Jennings Zetty
Brevard - Jane Jennings Zetty died Saturday, September 26, 2009 under the care of hospice at Tore's Home. She lived over two decades in this area, both in Brevard and Lake Toxaway. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlington L. (Zeke) Zetty, two brothers, Horace and William Jennings, and a niece, Rhoda Jane Boggs. She leaves behind five nieces and nephews , six grandnieces and nephews, three great grandnieces, and some very good friends.
Jane was born on May 13, 1916 in Houston, TX to Elizabeth McBride and Horace H. Jennings. Her great grandfather was a legislator in the Republic of Texas.
Jane graduated from the University of Texas in 1938 and, at the beginning of World War II, moved to Washington D.C. where she served as secretary to General Omar N. Bradley. Later, she worked in the White House during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations under Kennedy's Military Aide, Brigadier General Chester V. Clifton.
Her husband played in the Navy Band from 1935 to 1965 and attained the positions, First Chair for flute, Second Conductor, and Band Major. After retirement, he continued playing and conducting with community orchestras and bands.
The couple first moved to Florida, but they eventually put down roots in North Carolina because of the beauty of each of the seasons. Jane had a deep love of nature and served as president of the Toxaway Falls Garden Club.
While living in Lake Toxaway, she was part of a group of people who successfully worked to preserve the Lake Toxaway United Methodist Church which was built in 1912. She did the months of research required to apply for its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
She will be missed.
