Jean Elizabeth Cade

Jean E. Cade, 88, entered into eternal peace and reunited with her husband, family and friends on June 6, 2024 after a brief illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Merton K. Cade (2021) her sisters Barbara Evans and Patty Henry. Jean leaves behind her wonderful daughters, Linda Carrillo of Hendersonville NC and Lori (Jon) Lamson of Southington, CT. In addition to her daughters and son-in-law, she is heartbroken to leave her grandchildren, Nick (Grace), Anna, Alex, Abby, Andres and Kelsey.

Born May 4,1936 in Milford, MA to parents Ruby Bagg (born in Montreal) and Lt Colonel Gerald  Richardson (born in Cape Breton Island). Many of her relatives still live in Montreal and Nova Scotia. Jean was very proud of her family and ancestral history. Her Aunt Gladys Richardson Porter was the first woman mayor in all of Canada (The Maritimes) and first female member of legislature (Nova Scotia House of Assembly) in Canada.

Jean grew up in Milford MA, graduating High School in 1954. She graduated in 1958 from Framingham State Teachers College with a B.S. in Education. She was married two weeks later to Mert with immediate plans to move to CT and start her teaching career. Jean taught kindergarten from 1958 to 1996 (for 32 years). She took six years off to stay home with her daughters and returned to teaching when her children were in elementary school. Jean made lifelong friends during her teaching years. She was thrilled anytime when she realized she had an incoming kindergartener of one of her former students, and eventually of their children!  Her legacy in the community as a kind and friendly teacher exists to this day.

She was the first in Old Lyme to receive Teacher of Year in 1986/1987. She earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Connecticut College in New London CT in 1988. She chose to retire from teaching in CT 1996. She stayed to substitute for another 2 years before building a retirement life in Pisgah Forest, NC with her husband. Jean continued to substitute teach for 20 more years in Transylvania County in several local schools.

Jean enjoyed country music before it was cool, traveling, gardening, reading books especially historical English fiction, and was a lifelong die-hard Red Sox fan.

She took several trips with her husband to Australia and New Zealand. Jean traveled to many far-off countries including Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Scandinavia, Singapore, India, safari in Kenya, Africa, Venezuela, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, Greece, France, Spain, Great Britain, Ireland, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Costa Del Sol, Egypt, Canada and Mexico. Many of these trips she enjoyed with Colleen or Dorothy, her main traveling companions.

She continued to travel late in life. She attended her grandchildren’s High School and College graduations, became a celebrity at a Fenway summer Red Sox/Yankee game with a walk off win for the Red Sox in extra innings. She also crossed off more “bucket list” trips with family visiting Cades Cove, Kitty Hawk, The Wright Brothers National Memorial and North Myrtle Beach.

She was well liked by everyone she came into contact with. In honor of Jean’s love of education, books and travel, please consider donating books to your local school district or taking a trip with your family and friends to enjoy life and expand your horizons.

The family is planning a celebration of life in Old Lyme, CT in the near future. Once arrangements are complete, it will be posted via social media.
