Brevard -
Jean May Lambeth, 99, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at the home of her daughter in Brevard, NC. She was born March 17, 1913 to William Andrew and Susie Jones May in the Castlewood community of Russell County, VA. After the death of her mother in 1922, she was reared by her aunt and uncle, Samuel Byrd and Beatrice Minter May in Fieldale, VA.
In addition to her parents, aunt and uncle, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Woodrow Wilson Lambeth (Woody), by her brother, John William May, who had come to live with Jean and Woody as a teenager and by four other siblings, Jack, Hennie and Jim May and Ruth Simpkins.
She graduated from Blackstone Junior College and attended Radford College. During the Depression and World War II she worked at the Bank of Fieldale. Her husband's career in textiles took them from Fieldale, to Swepsonville, NC, Ridgewood, NJ and Lewiston Maine. In retirement they lived in Burlington, NC, Hendersonville, NC and for the last 16 years in Brevard, NC.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean Lambeth Hart and her husband, Ladson F. Hart of Brevard; grandson, Ladson Mills Hart and his wife Sara of Charlotte, NC and granddaughter, Katherine Hart MacDowell and her husband, Stephen of Nazareth, PA; and by her great-grand children Mills and Craton Hart, Rebecca, Anna and Woodrow MacDowell. She is also survived by her close and dear sister-in-law, Elizabeth May, and by siblings, Bruce May and Ann Lipps and by many loving and attentive nieces and nephews as well as by several special friends who considered her their unofficial grandmother and great grandmother.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 21 at 11 am at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville, Virginia.
