Jessie Palma Costello, 82, of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, passed away April 26, 2016 at Transylvania Regional Hospital. A native of New York, New York, she was the daughter of the late James Vincent and Sophie Sorcio Armanno. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Michael Costello.
Jessie was born March 25, 1934 in New York, NY at her family home. She graduated from Flushing High School in 1952. Then she spent her 20's modeling for Evan Piccano and Jones New York as well as her beautiful smile becoming the famous, "Colgate Smile" in Times Square of New York City. Following a glamorous modeling life, she had her son, Steven.
Then, Jessie began working as an assistant for a prestigious law firm, Wachtell and Lipton in New York City. In 1974, she met Michael Costello and they fell in love and were married. Their family became: Michael and Bobby- Michael's two sons and Steven. Then, in 1975 Palma was born and the family was complete. They spent many wonderful years in Southold, NY on Little Peconic Bay where they enjoyed beautiful beaches, boating and fishing. Jessie began volunteering with the PTA and spent many delightful years assisting students and creating cooking programs for all. She enjoyed showcasing her talented Italian cooking skills.
Jessie and Michael relocated to Brevard in 2012 with Palma, David and Sienna. They had their own apartment within their daughter's home and enjoyed their independence. Sadly, Michael passed away right after their move to Brevard but Jessie enjoyed the small community life she found by volunteering at SAFE, Inc. and spending her time at the Sacred Heart Church, Sharing House and other organizations and grief support groups in town. She made some wonderful friends here in Brevard, who will join the family as we all celebrate her life.
Jessie is survived by her son, Michael P. Costello and daughter-in-law Jackie and her three granddaughters, Dani, Caitlyn and Sam. She is also survived by her daughter Palma Cohen and her husband, David and their daughter, Sienna who attends Brevard Academy. Her grandson Robert Costello and his wife Millie and their two daughters, Ava and Sophia.
Jessie lived her life with passion and showed love to everyone, she always tried to help anyone in need with her no-nonsense attitude. She was giving out recipes to nurses and consoling other patient's families the day before she died. Palma and David found an instruction note after she died with details and wishes for her memorial arrangements. Her instruction sheet included important phone numbers and reminders of people to contact. But mostly she wants us all to remember to laugh and smile, as this life is wonderful…
"A celebration of life" will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard, NC. with Father Shawn O'Neil officiating. Lunch will follow the memorial service at the church.
