John Conrad Banas
Brevard- John Conrad Banas, 81, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital.
A native of Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late John and Anna Trawinski Banas. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Banas, and a sister, Adeline Banas Jeckovich.
John retired in 1989 from FlowServe Corp. (formerly Duriron Co.), Dayton, OH, where he was Group Vice President of the Pump and Foundry Division.
John was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Brevard and a 3rd Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council #8886. He served as Grand Knight from 2003 until 2005. John's work with K of C at Sacred Heart Church and the LAMB Foundation of North Carolina were first on a long list of service to others.
John's life of faith-filled service extended far beyond the community of Sacred Heart Church. Locally, he was a volunteer and member of the board for the Rise and Shine Freedom School Neighbors in Ministry. John's national and international charitable support also included the Benedictine Mission House (Schuyler, NE), several Native American missions and schools in the western states as well as missions and schools in foreign lands, and numerous charitable organizations here in the United States.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Mazurowski Banas; children Charmaine Boggs and her husband Bruce of Centerville, OH, Timothy Banas of York, PA, Kathleen Coleman and her husband Jay of Springboro, OH, Michael Banas and his wife Marcia of Nashville, TN, Paul Banas of Seattle, WA, Maria Padgett and her husband Gary of Lebanon, TN, Rosanne Bohannon and her husband Wayne of Albany, GA, Amy Mechling and her husband Dave of Columbus, OH; 10 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at 11:00 AM with Father John Pagel officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
