John Roy Garren, a lifelong native and resident of Transylvania County, went to his heavenly home on the morning of April 23, 2018. He was born on October 9, 1929, to Henry Edgar Garren, Sr. and Eva Galloway Garren. He grew up in Brevard and graduated from Brevard High School in 1947.
Roy married the love of his life, Margaret Evelyn Benson on December 24, 1952. They had over 65 beautiful years together. He was a wonderful, loving father to two very lucky daughters, Lynn Garren Bump (Gregg) of Cumming, GA and Dianne Garren Myers of Tryon, NC.
Roy is survived by two of his brothers, Carl (Geraldine) of Etowah, NC, and Craig (Jewel) of Knoxville, TN, and a number of nieces and nephews. He leaves behind four grandchildren, Kenny Bump of Phoenix, AZ, Julie Fenske (Ben) of Suwanee, GA, Jessica Myers-Murphy (Patrick) of Clovis, NM, and Will Myers of Asheville, NC. As well as two great-granddaughters, Charlotte Fenske and Chloe Murphy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Eva Garren, three brothers Clarence, Harold, and Ed, and one sister Elizabeth.
Roy was a strong, quiet man who was steadfast in his loyalty to his family and the Lord. He might have been a man of few words, but when he spoke you wanted to listen. Unknowingly, he was teaching his family the important lesson that your words should be worthwhile.
Roy served his country in the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and after his honorable discharge from active duty, he continued to serve in the Army Reserves for several years. After his marriage to Margaret, Roy began work at the Olin Corporation where he invested thirteen years of service in the company. He then left Olin to work at the Brevard Post Office. He remained there until his retirement in 1993.
Roy enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife, Margaret, and they were members of several dance clubs throughout the years. Roy was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Brevard. He and Margaret loved to share nightly Bible studies together. Roy was also an avid collector of old coins, big band music, and other memorabilia. He enjoyed both playing and watching golf. Roy enjoyed traveling and spending time with his friends and family.
Roy was a lifelong Mason and member of the Shriners. He was also a member of the Brevard Jaycees.
It is with sincere gratitude the family wishes to thank the caring staff of Tori's Homes - caregivers Mandee and Debbie and the staff of Tori's Home 1: Anita, Mary Grace, Sandra, Christina, and Kelli, for their excellent care, love, concern, and support, as well as the loving residents Connie and Addie.
