Pisgah Forest - John Thomas Monteith, 66, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 28, 2008 at Transylvania Regional Hospital.

A native of Transylvania County, he was the son of the late John Wesley Monteith, Jr. and Mary Barnett Monteith. He is also preceded in death by a twin sister, Mary June Monteith.

Mr. Monteith was a 1960 graduate of Brevard High School and a 1963 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer and was the former owner of Moore Funeral Home. He had served for four years as District 11 Director of the NC Funeral Directors Association.

He was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church and was a member of Brevard Elks Lodge #1768 where he had served as Tiler for many years. He had served on the Brevard A.B.C. Board, the Brevard/Transylvania Economic Development Board, and the Abandoned Cemeteries Board.

Mr. Monteith had formerly coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams and was instrumental in helping form the first Transylvania County Senior Babe Ruth team.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Schmidt Monteith of the home; son, John H. Monteith and wife Sharon of Brevard; daughter, Deborah M. Mathews and husband Doug of Jacksonville Beach, FL; grandsons, Wes Monteith of Brevard and Cole Mathews of Jacksonville Beach, FL; sister, Linda M. Moody and husband Charles of Franklin; brother, Gary M. Monteith and wife Barbara Ann of Pisgah Forest; nieces, Becky Fulp, Christy Crane, Natalie Newcomb, and Susan Durrett; nephews, Chris Moody, Mark and John M. Durrett; great nephews Justin and Jacob Fulp, Mason Moody, Nathan Rathbone Crane, John and Alex Newcomb, Josh and Joseph Newcomb, Blake Sutton; great nieces, Kaylee Fulp and Evangeline Durrett.

The memorial service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Bratu and Lee Ray Green officiating. Private burial will be in Davidson River Cemetery Extension.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 pm Tuesday at Moore Funeral Home, Brevard, and immediately following the memorial service.

The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials may be made to the KOALA Scholarship Fund, 23 Medical Park Circle, Brevard, NC 28712 or to Temple Baptist Church, P.O. Box 126, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768.
