Joseph Kondratick

March 3, 1930 — May 25, 2010

Brevard, North Carolina

Joseph Kondratick
Brevard -Joseph Kondratick, 80, of Brevard died, Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Transylvania Regional Hospital. He was a son of the late Michael and Pauline Watzman Kondratick.

He was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Auburn, NY and attended St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Fletcher, NC. He was also a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and attended Union Springs High School in Union Springs, NY.

Joe grew up on an upstate New York farm during the Depression, and the lessons he learned there stayed with him throughout his life. He valued hard work, and respected people with strong work ethics. He cared for his neighbors wherever he lived. He loved the outdoors, and many of his happiest times were spent hunting, gardening, or harvesting wild mushrooms. In this last, he especially enjoyed Brevard's many places to find delicious mushrooms. He was frugal but not cheap, traditional but not intolerant.

Perhaps most importantly, Joe taught his three daughters that a job worth doing is a job worth doing well. He performed even the smallest daily task to the best of his ability, and insisted that his girls do the same. His attention to detail shone through in his carpentry work. He was a master craftsman, and built the house he raised his family in. He leaves behind innumerable tangible displays of his love, in the furniture and other woodwork which fills his daughters' homes. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife Leatha "Collene" Kondratick of 54 years, three daughters; Donna deChauny and husband Tom of Barrington, RI., Claudia Hawkins and husband Mike of Brevard, NC., Judy Shackelford and husband Randy of Bear, DE., one brother; Metro Kondratick and wife Joan of Rockville, MD., six grandchildren; Capt. Benning, GA, Evelyn deChauny of Harrisonburg, VA., Gabrielle deChauny of Barrington, RI., Allison Hawkins of Brevard, NC., Sarah and Ben Shackelford of Bear, DE., and three great grandchildren; Noelani, Anna and Hailey.

No local services are planned. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 31, 2010 in Auburn, NY. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 30 Cross Street, Auburn, NY 13021
