Lawrence Wendell Self, 78, of Pisgah Forest, passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. He was born December 5, 1935 in Pike County, Arkansas to the late William Dewey and Velma Lois Theabolt Self. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Glenna Self.
At the early age of 17, he was engineer of a radio transmitting station in Corpus Christi, TX. This position led to radio and TV announcing.
Mr. Self was a veteran of the US Army and graduated from Officer Candidate School as 2nd Lieutenant.
He was an Electronics Design Engineer for over 40 years, and held multiple patents in the electronics engineering field and was the owner and operator of Logical Products for a number of those years.
He was a man of strong faith, a pilot, a HAM radio operator and loved gardening and hiking. He and his wife Marilyn were active in wild animal rescue and rehabilitation in Transylvania County.
He is survived his wife, Marilyn H. Self; two sons, Mark E. Thompson and wife Cindy of Cumming, GA and Scott S. Thompson of Asheville, NC; one sister, June Self of Texarkana, AR and three grandsons: Scott Thompson, Matthew Thompson and Geoffrey Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Transylvania Habitat for Humanity, 692 Ecusta Road, Brevard, NC 28712.
