Lillian Bird Zachary

Brevard -Lillian Bird Zachary, of Brevard and Givens' Estates, died August 22, 2010. Born on December 6, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Dr. J. F. Zachary and Willie Thomas Zachary. She was a teacher who loved her profession and spent 43 years, less five years obtaining her Master's and Doctorate degrees, practicing it.

She started in primary and elementary education, returned to college, and resumed her career at Catawba College. From there, she went to the University of Maryland where she taught for 8 years. She then "came home" by moving to Cullowhee to teach at Western Carolina University and remained there until her retirement in 1985.

Retiring to Brevard, she lived there until moving to Givens' Estate in Asheville in 1997. During her years in Brevard she was involved with the Early Childhood Development Program, as well as serving as librarian for First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one sister, Ann Zachary Compton of Fort Wayne, IN, and her husband, Roy; one niece, Susan Lee Stahl and her husband, Doug also of Fort Wayne, IN; one nephew, James F. Compton of Cumberland City, Tennessee; and one great niece and her family in Alaska.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm, September 10, 2010 at First United Methodist Church . Burial will be private.
