Lorraine Ward Hunter, a 29-year resident of Brevard, NC died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family and loved ones on January 20, 2014 in Brevard. She was 85 years old.
Ms. Hunter was born May 28, 1928 in Muskogee, OK, the daughter of Roberta Angeline Kyle Ward and Harry Parker Ward, Sr. She was the step-daughter of Wilson C. Smith. Lorraine was a graduate of Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA and Strayer's Business College in Washington, DC.
Lorraine married Mason Drummond Thomas in 1947. Their daughter Donna Lynn Thomas was born in 1948. Lorraine and Mason were divorced in 1950.
Ms. Hunter was introduced to her soul mate on a blind date arranged by her sister. Six months later Lorraine married Marine Lieutenant David Julius Hunter in 1952. As a Marine wife, Lorraine travelled the country with Dave from one Marine base to another for the next 21 years, while also doing the work she considered most important in her life, raising 3 children and taking care of the family. Upon Dave's retirement from the Marine Corps as a full Colonel in 1973, Lorraine secured her residential real estate license and was a successful broker in the booming Southern California market for several years.
In 1982, Lorraine and Dave moved to Connestee Falls where she was a driving force in water aerobics activities, and served as an instructor for many years. She enjoyed bocce and golf and also served as Chairwoman of Good Neighbors, which was co-founded by her husband Dave. Lorraine also made a special effort to welcome new Connestee Falls residents and help introduce them to their neighbors.
With Dave's health failing, the Hunters moved to College Walk in January, 2011, where Lorraine served as her husband's vigilant care giver, constant companion and love of his life, and the family wishes to acknowledge College Walk for all the love, kindness and care extended to them these past several years.
Mrs. Hunter was predeceased by her husband Dave in 2013 after nearly 61 years of marriage. She is survived by 3 children; Lynn Hunter of Asheville; David Hunter (Donna) of Brevard; and Dana Fife (Walter) of Manti, Utah, and by her sister Lyn Woltemate of Brevard. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at Moore Funeral Home in Brevard, NC on Saturday, January 25 beginning at 11:00 A.M. with funeral service to follow immediately at 12:00 noon. Lorraine will be interred next to her husband at Blue Ridge Garden of Memory, Brevard, NC with Reverend Keith Thompson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Lorraine's memory be made to Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church , 249 E. Main Street, Brevard, NC 28712.
