Lucille Nix Garren, born on August 25, 1926 in Canton, NC to Nettie Heaton and John Henry Nix, passed away on December 27, 2013following a brave fight with cancer. After growing up in upstate South Carolina, Lucille lived her adult life in Transylvania County, NC.
Lucille was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed the art of homemaking including food and flower gardening, canning, freezing and preserving foods, and home decorating. Her lifelong interest in creating items with fabric, needle and thread resulted in countless items of original clothing, exquisite quilts, and home furnishings that enriched the lives of her family.
Her interest in seeing the world led to travels with her loving husband, David, as well as with many of their friends. She visited all fifty US states and over 19 foreign countries making new friends and learning about the history of the areas along the way. She also visited Georgia in the Soviet Union as an Asheville NC Sister City Representative.
As an active member of Turkey Creek Baptist Church Lucille sang in the choir. In her senior years her love of music and devotion to God were expressed through singing at local, state, southeastern and national Gospel singings and Conventions. Over thirty religious songs written by her have been published, including her favorite, 'Oh What Love'.
Lucille is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Robert David Garren; their four children, June Jones and husband, Van of Raleigh, NC, Randall Garren of Durham, NC, Donna Miller and husband, Wayne of Apex, NC, and Vivian Rose and husband, Mike of Timberlake, NC; their grandchildren, Phillip Jones and wife, Jamie, of Raleigh, NC, Peter Jones of Cambridge, MA, and Lari Trombley and husband Trevor of Baumholder, Germany; their great granddaughter Kira Trombley.
The family wishes to thank everyone at The Oaks of Brevard where Lucille received excellent loving and rejuvenating care during her illness. In 2013, Lucille moved to Sunrise of Raleigh Assisted Living where the wonderful employees and residents showed Lucille and David that "home" can be in more than one place and that new friends and fun can be found at any age.
Flowers are welcome and contributions can be made to Turkey Creek Baptist Church or Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
The family will receive visitors 6 - 8 pm Sunday Dec. 29 at Moore Funeral Home in Brevard, NC. Funeral service will be at Turkey Creek Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest, NC at 2 pm on Monday, Dec. 30, followed by interment at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Pisgah Forest, NC.
