Mamie Bumgarner McCall

God opened the gates of Heaven for Mamie Bumgarner McCall, age 94, on July 7, 2023.

Mamie was born on August 7, 1928 to Radford Hayes Bumgarner and Zula Lusk from Jackson County. Radford was a teamster for Carr Lumber Company and moved to New Mexico with Carr in 1924. Mamie was born in a logging camp near Almagorda. She was raised in logging camps as her father followed the timber. Mamie was orphaned at a young age, losing her mother in 1935 to typhoid, and her father in 1941 to a heart attack. She then lived with her eldest sister, Helen English, and they came home to Mills River, NC where Mamie went to school.

In 1952, Mamie married Jack McCall who worked for Ecusta, and they made their home with their only daughter in Brevard. In 1969, Mamie went to work at Transylvania Regional Hospital as a CNA. She loved her work and nursed for almost three decades before retirement.

Mamie was an active member of Enon Baptist Church and beloved by all who knew her. She touched a lot of lives with hospital visits, calling on the shut-ins, providing for disadvantaged children, ministering to special needs campers, and serving others on missions trips. She also loved to garden and was the happiest with her hands in the dirt. Laughter was as natural as breathing to Mamie and her light shone from within.

Mamie was predeceased by her parents, sisters Helen English and Dorothy Rogers, and brother Hayes Bumgarner. She is survived by daughter Yvonne McCall-Dickson, son-in-law Wesley Dickson, and step-grandchildren Hesper (Sean) Trapp, and Wes (Ashley) Dickson. Also nieces Sandy Hoxit and Sheila (Bobby) Gilstrap, and nephew Gerald Bumgarner, all of whom she loved as if they were her own.

Her friends were many, and among those who are counted as family are Bobbie Curto, Phyllis (Kenneth) McCoy, and Rose (Dennis) Shuler who were there for a long and loving friendship.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 11th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Moore-Blanchard Funeral Home on Country Club Road, Brevard.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 12th at 11:00 am at Enon Baptist Church in Pisgah Forest. A graveside blessing will follow at Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Pisgah Forest. Pallbearers are Wesley Dickson, Harold McCall, Sean Trapp, Chip Haws, Mark Gosnell, and Paul Lamm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Enon Baptist Church at 4531 Old Hendersonville Highway, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768 or enonbaptistpisgahforest.org.

The family sends a heartfelt thank you to friends, the church, and the health care workers who provided support, strength, and comfort during this time.

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15
