Maner Ware of See Off Mountain died peacefully in Transylvania Regional Hospital of natural causes. Her daughter and son and their spouses were with her at death.
Born in Union, South Carolina, Mrs. Ware lived a long and interesting life. She married another South Carolinian, Marion Dargan Ware (deceased), and was the mother of Deborah Hart Ware Parrish and Christopher Watson Ware, both of See Off Mountain.
Maner earned a BA degree in English from Winthrop College, with honors, and attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina. She followed her mother's example, and taught school for several years. After marriage she and her husband lived and worked in Atlanta, Georgia, where Mr. Ware owned a photography studio. She was a volunteer with the Atlanta Civic Ballet where her daughter took lessons and performed.
Mrs. Eliza Dargan Ware, her husband's mother, purchased land on See Off Mountain in the early 1900s, and her family visited often on holidays and during the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Ware built a home near Dunn's Rock in 1976, the year her husband died, and she lived there since.
Maner was known in the Dunn's Creek community and in Brevard as a tireless volunteer who cared about people, young and old. She helped in the development of the Homesteaders Community Center and in the administration of the Harlee-Ware Scholarship for mountain youth. She tutored at the Job Corps, worked with the Literacy Council (her language skills were without peer), and was the second president of that organization.
A diligent and enthusiastic Episcopalian, Maner not only regularly attended St. Philips Episcopal Church but also served with the Episcopal Church Women. One of her favorite church-related activities was the Shop of St. Philips, which she managed for 15 years.
Maner Ware was always interested in everything going on around her. She was curious and questioned whoever and whatever she chose. Quick to point out inconsistencies and mistakes, she was able to make people laugh at their own follies. Not able to hear well in her later years, she spoke loudly and hoarsely. That voice will be missed.
Her talent for sewing, quilting, crocheting, and knitting was exemplary. She had a great eye for color and design, and many cousins and friends possess a piece of her art.
Maner was buried in the company of her family on May 18, 2014 in the family cemetery adjoining the Dunn's Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Her daughter and her husband; her son and his wife; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren attended the service on a cold and cloudy May day that was given by The Reverend Carter Heyward and The Reverend Rob Field.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 20th, 10:00 AM at St. Philip's Church.
