Margaret Vogt Lamar, 92, of Brevard, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Tore's Home in Brevard.
Born in Winter Haven, FL, October 21, 1919, to William Vassie Vogt and Helen Heisley Vogt, she was the oldest of four sisters. Her father was in the citrus business and the family lived in Orlando, FL, Frostproof, FL, and Sebring, FL before moving to Lake Wales in 1934, where she met her future husband, John Allen Lamar.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Lamar, her parents and her sister, Helen Vogt Thompson.
Margaret received her B.S. degree in Chemistry from Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University) in 1940, and her Masters Degree in Chemistry/Medical Technology from Wayne State University in 1942. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Delta Phi and Gamma Sigma Epsilon and a Henry Ford Scholar. She worked in the medical field in Orlando and medical research at Emory University in Atlanta.
Margaret married John Allen Lamar on October 2, 1943, in Lake Wales, FL. She and Allen soon moved to Atlanta where they lived for over 30 years until Allen's retirement from Sears, Roebuck & Company. Margaret and Allen moved to Transylvania County in 1977.
Over the years, both in Atlanta and in Transylvania County, Margaret was active in the community and her church. She is lovingly remembered for her quiet support and tireless efforts helping others behind the scene.
Survivors include her children, Mary Lamar Adams and her husband Craig Gibson Adams of Brevard; and John Allen Lamar Jr. and his wife, Mary Rybolt Lamar of Winter Park, FL ; three grandchildren, Lamar David Adams of Portland, OR, Laurie Lamar Camacho and Leslie Lamar Harmeson of Winter Park, FL ; four great grandchildren ; and sisters Mary Vogt DuVal of Spruce Pine, NC and Virginia Vogt Thompson of Atlanta, GA ; and many nieces and nephews.
Following a private burial, a memorial service of remembrance will be held at 2 :00 PM, Thursday, November 10, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Jordan and Rev. Kerry Purselle officiating.
The family will receive visitors following the memorial service.
The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church or another charity of choice.
The family would also like to thank Angela O'Shields for her many years of devotion to Margaret and to Kelly Miller and the entire staff at Tore's Home for their compassionate care during her final years.
